I Shouldn't Be Gaming Right Now… But I Am!

Wait, there’s more!

Posted by deckard47 on March 29, 2008

I found this absolutely ridiculously amusing site, by way of Kotaku. It’s called The Video Game Name Generator, and you need to go check it out. Some of them aren’t that great, but I just created a new name, “Orbital Bubblegum Caper,” and “Colonial Casino Inspector,” so I’m happy.

Tiny Update

Posted by deckard47 on March 29, 2008

Things have been super-busy, and I need to update the newspaper and reviews section, but I have way too much reading to do, so oh well. Mostly, I’m just trying to finish Assassin’s Creed. I still enjoy it a lot, but it annoys me how tough it is to assassinate someone. Don’t get me wrong, I love having 20 minute duels with about 30 guys, where they each attack me one by one until I kill the leader. I love it so much it only makes me a little angry. Still, it would be nice if I could break through the line of guards onto the scaffolding and wrist-knife that asshole in the neck. But no, I try to break through, or draw my throwing knife, or do anything besides chill in “priest mode,” and every single guard turns angry-red. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Seriously, let me assassinate somebody in a way that doesn’t remind me of Blood 2 or Quake. You, know, surprising, or stealthy or…. anything! Whatever. More later on all of my exciting exploits.

Blog Banter: Gamer Stereotypes

Posted by deckard47 on March 27, 2008

Welcome, welcome to the 3rd installment of Blog Banter, the monthly blogging extravaganza headed by bs angel! Blog Banter involves our cozy community of enthusiastic gaming bloggers, a common topic, and a week to post articles pertaining to said topic. The results are quite entertaining and can range from deep insight to ROFLMAO. Any questions about Blog Banter should be directed here. Check out other Blog Banter articles at the bottom of this post!

I like to think of myself as a pretty atypical gamer, but even I can see that I fall into several stereotypes. The most obvious (and possibly the most prevalent, but I can’t be sure) would be the stereotype of the person who spends a lot of time gaming when they could be doing other, more “important” things (homework, job searching, being manly out in the wilderness, going to seksy parties, etc.). On the other hand, I go to parties, I see the sun when I am forced to go to classes, and I do just enough work to get by. That still leaves us with the “willing to game when most people would go do normal stuff” accusation.

In this area, I think that I’m pretty much guilty as charged. For instance, if my friends are hanging around, doing something possibly interesting, and I’m in the middle of a tricky battle in BGII or Oblivion or something, chances are, I’ll forget about whatever they’re doing, and concentrate on kicking some ass. Likewise, it is perfectly normal for me to spend an hour or two playing Halo 3, not because I really want to, but because if I didn’t, I might have to work. The only places that are really off-limits when it comes to gaming are work and road trips. Even worse, whenever friends come over to see me from somewhere far away (i.e. not from down the hall), one of the exciting activities I often ply them with is video games. Of course, many of my friends suffer from the same malady that I do, so they don’t mind the frequent Rock Band and Smash Brothers games.

Still, I keep the lights on most of the time, my room is clean and bright, and I don’t have perpetual Cheeto hands, so I’m not a complete creep. Then again, I think that people who do stuff I don’t do are silly, so I’m quite happy with my various oddities, and often quite amused by everyone else’s. That is, unless their habits are like mine, and then they’re just weird. Obviously. Rock on, mildly weird, mildly obsessed gamers, and anybody else who wants to have a little fun. I’ll take this stereotype any day.

Bishop Should Go

Posted by deckard47 on March 12, 2008

It looks like the internet doesn’t want me to work. Why do I say that? Because there are a whole bunch of screens from Aliens: Colonial Marines up over at Gamesradar. They look pretty good, although I’m not sure about the aliens. Still, I accepted Monolith’s aliens (who never looked too hot), and these are definitely an imporvement. Still, the most important aspect of this news is that the game “will feature four-player drop in co-op. With either system link, split screen or online multiplayer support.” What? I have never heard this before. I guess they won’t let us play the aliens (which is sad), but co-op Aliens? Yes! And, from the new game, a cool picture of a drop-ship.

Finally, now that I have realized how to embed photos in the main part of the page (stop laughing now), there will be a lot of them. Like so many.

Bwahahah, I’m Back

Posted by deckard47 on March 12, 2008

Instead of working, I found two very exciting bits of information for you. First of all, Mass Effect 2’s side-quests won’t make you throw up in boredom. Yes! Apparently now that the game has been defined and established, number 2 can have minor quests that are actually fun. Maybe.

Second, Dawn of War (that’s Relic’s Warhammer 40K strategy game), which I enjoyed quite a lot, is getting a sequel. Yay for everybody who liked it.

Finally, and this is a bit late, the new Mass Effect DLC expansion mission, “Bringing Down the Sky,” is out and about, waiting to be downloaded. I already have it, but I have yet to muster up the will to make a new character. Will it be the honorable version of my dastardly Alana Shepard (cruel, badass, savior of the galaxy) or a male character? It’s hard to make men, because besides their grizzled hairless goon, the noses, hair, eyes and other facial features for men are bizarre. I feel like Viktor Frankenstein, mixing and matching hideous and disparate body parts. Speaking of Victor and his own creator… back to the salt mines.

Cardassians Are So Cool

Posted by deckard47 on March 12, 2008

In the middle of studying for my Mod. Euro Midterm, I realized that I wanted to download the first episode of DS9. That show rocks so hard. The music, the characters, the actors, Kira’s early hair! It’s all amazing. Plus there is Andrew Ryan as Quark. Awesome. I just want to watch this show now, no work.

  Reformed Collaborater

Isn’t that just absolutely awesome? Reformed Collaborator! It’s so sad that I got into (in a amusingly serious way) and out of Star Trek cards before they started doing DS9. I hate it when you lose treachery but gain Honor and Physics! Damn Cardassians. Oh, and who else was sad when that DS9 PC game “The Fallen” sucked so much? All of you, it’s ok, just tell me. I mean, it used the Unreal Engine! The Unreal Engine delivered my 10 favorite games for most of junior high and high school. It had reflective floors!

I Wish I Enjoyed This

Posted by deckard47 on March 10, 2008

Way too much work right now, which is why I’ve been gone for however long it is. Here is a new Starcraft 2 video, showing us the Zerg. Cool. I wish I could get worked up, but right now I just want to write more about Sectarianism. And Lebanon. On a lighter note, Darkstar One is all kinds of fun. I’m still upgrading my ship, and I get the feeling that I’m not at all far into the game. More later.

10 Dollar Bargain

Posted by deckard47 on March 3, 2008

I was trying not to work yesterday, and as is often the case, I excelled. I found this game on Steam, called Darkstar One. It is a space exploration combat game, in the mold of Elite and Privateer. It rocks a whole lot, the game is totally playable on my Macbook, and it cost me 10 dollars. I really can’t think of anything more awesome. Time to turn the Darkstar One into the fastest ship in the galaxy.

Awful Self-Promotion

Posted by deckard47 on March 1, 2008

There are now two new pages up there on the left. One is for my MobyGames reviews. A lot of the time, I write a review for one place, and then don’t want to write three other versions of it. So, sometimes I review a game on MobyGames and don’t do the same for the site, and the other way around. Now, you can see the reviews that I wrote, but was too lazy to reqritw for you guys. Enjoy.

The other page links to my student newspaper and all of my articles. Again, these are mostly reviews, but some of them are more interesting (especially the interview). Anyway, maybe some of them will be interesting to you as well.

Aside from that, it is the weekend, andI have less work than normal, so of course I just want to play something. Should I finish one of those games I just got, or should I go back to finish and old one? What about you?

Not Video Games: Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne

Posted by deckard47 on March 1, 2008

Every week, I’ve decided to implement the “Not Video Games” post. This will be a post that reviews or covers a game that is not a video game (or possibly video games based on board games, card games, etc.). Hopefully, this will help convince people that I am two kinds of dork, not just one! Also, it’ll introduce you to games you might not otherwise play. Enjoy!

Today, it is time for something completely different. I recently acquired Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne as gifts, and as such this semester I have been trying to convince people to play them with me as much as possible. Of course, only a few of my friends are cool enough to enjoy these games, but I’ve still had some fun times.

I’ve been thinking of getting both of these for the 360, because then I could play these stately, slow games with people besides the regular two people who I play with (not disparaging them, I’m glad two whole friends of mine enjoy these things). But, because I feel like it, I’ll review them for you, since some of you have refused to play these games when you had the chance. Losers. Read the rest of this entry »
